Many critics think that Bassanio is not equal to her.  First, many argue that the love test Bassanio takes is a fake, for the song gives the hints.  But the song gives only hints, not the answer, and how he interprets it depends entirely on him.\nSecond, they argue, Bassanio says during the trial scene that he will sacrifice his wife to deliver Antonio.  But that Bassanio thinks about sacrificing his wife only after he thinks about sacrificing himself indicates that her life is more important to him than his own life. \nThird problem is that he gives the ring away to the doctor but tries to keep it secret. This seems to go against the spirit of the love test which tests whether he can hazard all for lead.  However, when Portia is hardened, Antonio interferes and swears he will “be bound again: My soul upon the forfeit, that your lord/ Will never more break faith advisedly”(5.1.251-53).  Since Antonio is Bassanio’s “bosom” friend, and he must needs be like him, Antonio’s words testify to Bassanio’s honesty.
