 note = {At the beginning of this play, Isabella visits Saint Clare to become a sister. However, before she makes a vow, her brother sends her a messenger, asking her to plead Angelo for his life. When she pleads for her brother's life, she unintentionally awakens Angelo's desire for her and also her desire for him. Her struggle to restrain her desire is so intense that she breaks down in hysteria. By becoming a kind of procuress and asking Mariana to substitute her for an affair with Angelo, she manages to keep her physical purity. However, indicting Angelo for his injustice, Isabella must confess her love affair with him in public. After she goes through this symbokic defilement and is touched by Mariana's true love for Angelo, she recognizes her own sin and shows mercy- the ultimate virture of a Christian, which she sought to acquire when she visited Saint Clare at the beginning of the play-to her fellow sinner.},
